Why SoundAround is Dedicated to Providing Crystal Clear Audio

SoundAround’s Mission and Vision

SoundAround’s mission is to improve the way sound is experienced in every space we visit. Through an understanding of acoustic science, we aim to enable communication, eliminate distracting background noise, and achieve a balanced frequency spectrum through proper design, placement, and installation of acoustic materials.

Additionally, we strive to create unforgettable moments by providing top-notch sound reinforcement for events and performances of all kinds.

At SoundAround, we value and celebrate diversity. We welcome and serve individuals from all walks of life, regardless of their race, gender, age, religion, or sexual orientation.

We believe in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.

Meet Our Founder, Jay Berget

My passion for room acoustics and the study of sound started with piano and violin lessons, then developed on a number of stages along the way. As a teenager, I played guitar and sang in a variety of venues. In a few venues, the audience could not hear me well, and in others, it seemed I could only hear them! I needed better amplification and monitoring and resolved to save money by building my own speaker cabinets. In preparation, I learned about Thiele-Small parameters, resonance, and damping.

Then, I began to record music, which allowed me to see a visual representation of the waveforms on a computer screen. I could see the impulse and decay, then manipulate the sound digitally and relate it back to what I heard. I had to learn about frequency response, microphone placement, and ultimately, the sound of the room itself in order to improve the overall quality of my recordings.

In college, I engineered live sound in larger public auditoriums with the Wisconsin Singers, a traveling show choir and 10-piece band. This opened my eyes to the concepts of coverage, interference, and filtering. Each auditorium exhibited a different frequency response and reverberation, which gave it a unique character and changed the way we mixed.

Later studying the design of the best recording studios and concert halls revealed that sound treatment was everywhere, serving to reflect, absorb, focus, and diffuse sound strategically to achieve the goals of that acoustic space.

In renovating a home, and as a property manager for multi-family dwellings, I learned a great deal about common construction methods, which revealed that low STC values for floors and walls are common, making for sometimes unhappy tenants!

Physically working with studs, drywall, and insulation helped me understand more concretely how decoupling, adding mass, and air sealing helps to lower transmission of sound and vibration.

That's why I founded SoundAround. It's more than just a business to me—it's a platform to share my passion and expertise with others who want to treat their ears better.

Whether it's providing audio equipment rentals, offering sound engineering services, or providing guidance on sound treatment, my goal is to make a positive difference in people's lives through the power of sound.
